Write a short report on a non-business information systems application.
Consider, for Military applications exploit a vast range of technologies and foster a great deal of research. Explorations of space and of the oceans offer particularly difficult challenges to designers and builders of the systems that operate them. Scientific and engineering applications abound in areas of climate modeling and simulation, chemistry, process control, process simulation and modeling, to name just a few areas.
It will include the following components:
• Abstract (300 words): Who, what, why, when, where, how, and outcome/recommendation.
• Introduction: Define and describe the area of interest. What is the topic, and why is it useful to write about it? What has led your interest in it, i.e., why have you chosen this topic?
• Background/history: What are the origins of the concept? What efforts have taken place in the past? Who are some of the current authors that are prominent in this area? Why and how has it improved, changed, degraded, etc.? How did it reach the current state, and from here what are you going to research and report on?
• Discussion: The primary research areas, the various options you’ve researched, and the primary arguments for/against. Here is a suggested approach; feel free to devise your own structureq for the discussion:
– Describe applications of IS in the area. What types of applications are used in the area of interest? For instance, in education IT is used to perform many different functions. In order to discuss learning management systems (LMSs), your report would need to mention at a minimum the types of applications that comprise LMSs (from record keeping to content delivery to communication).
– Use of data/information specific to this area. Information systems deal with data and information. In the application or area of interest, what is the nature of the data used and/or information produced?
– Examples of applications in this area.
– Special requirements for development and operation. Are the requirements in any way special (for instance, are they particularly stringent)? Are there any special development needs? Does it have critical performance objectives (for instance, real-time requirements for battle support)? Other critical success factors?
– Compare and contrast with business information systems.
• Conclusion: Major areas researched, possible outcomes of choosing each.
• References and Appendices (if needed): A list of references must be included, while appendices are optional. Use IEEE documentation style.
