This week we are talking about emotions at work. This is a very appropriate topic since we are all dealing with a lot of stress around the Covid pandemic, inflation, juggling many things at once… The goal of this project is to understand how negative emotions affect people at work and explore various coping strategies.
To understand negative emotions at work, you’ll interview 3 people who work to gain their perspectives. Some examples of questions you can ask them are:
What would you say your stress/anger levels get to at work on a scale of 1-10?
What causes you stress and/or anger at work?
How do these negative emotions affect you physically?
How do these negative emotions affect you mentally?
How do these negative emotions affect you behaviorally?
How do you cope with stress/anger while you are at work?
How do you think your age, culture, gender, job title/position… affects how you handle stress/anger at work compared to other people?
Any other questions you feel might be relevant
The interviews can be done through phone calls, emails, or Zoom.
Write it up:
Introduction paragraph on emotions at work – introduce the topic of emotions at work and what else you are talking about in the paper.
Provide interviewees’ basic background information (gender, age, ethnicity/race, job position, company worked at, time worked at the company), and summaries of their responses (do not reiterate word for word what they said). Use quotes from what the people said when necessary. Each person should be discussed in their own paragraph.
Analyze, compare, and contrast your interviewees’ responses. This section is important – really think about why people responded differently from each other (was it due to their role at work, their gender, their age, their educational level…).
