Essay #1 Rhetorical Analysis Outline
I. Introduction
a. Present the issue under discussion (give a quick background info about the issue before discussing the article.
b. Transition into the article; introduce the author and the article title. Give a very brief info about
the author (1-2 sentences).
c. Summarize the article (4-5 sentences)
d. Transition into your own thesis statement (see examples in files provided).
II. Analyze the authors’ Rhetorical Situation:
a. TELOS of the argument (purpose of the argument);
b. KAIROS of the argument (occasion: forensic, epideictic, or deliberative);
c. Identify the type of argument (definition, proposal, factual, cause-and-effect, etc.); d. Identify the intended audience;
III. Analyze the argument’s appeal to ETHOS
a. Identify ethos in the argument (provide specific examples, explain how they add to the ethos of the argument). Was the use of ethos effective?
IV. Analyze the argument’s appeal to LOGOS
a. Identify logos in the argument (provide specific examples and quotes, explain how they
