You will analyze both the people featured in stories, as well as the people featured in advertisements.
1. List the town or towns covered by the magazine. What appears to be the average social class of the people who are pictured in the magazine? Be as specific as possible (e.g., poor, working class or lower-middle class, middle class, upper middle-class, upper class or wealthy).
2. Cite an example of a special symbol or marker (clothes, cars, homes, activities, etc.) that suggests people are of the class status that you identify in 1(a). Explain the significance of this symbol/marker of social class.
3. Cite a second example of a special symbol or marker (clothes, cars, homes, activities, etc.) that suggests people are of the class status that you identify in 1(a). Explain the significance of this symbol/marker of social class.
4. What possibly accounts for the town’s social class make-up? If certain social classes appear to be missing or underrepresented in the town, why might this be so?
5. How might the images in the magazine itself contribute to the town’s social class make-up? People (e.g., prospective residents) looking at the magazine would think what and do or not do what?
