Through this assignment you will compare the roles of various allied health and human services professionals in supporting the health (ILO 5), well being and social inclusion of people with developmental disabilities, and demonstrate sound writing skills that are appropriate to various media to communicate your critical thinking (ILO 6).
Jamal is 48 years old. He is shy, except around close friends. Jamal lives in supported accommodation with two other people who also have disabilities – Mira and Brian. They are supported in their home by support workers who are restored on at various times. Jamal and Mira like to watch TV together, especially football games: Jamal is a mad Controlling supporter, Mira supports the Gee long Cats, and Brian is an Essen don fan. Jamal, Meara and Brian like to hang out at the local shopping mall together. Occasionally they will go to a small local movie theater, where staff know them well, or play bowls at a local bowls club. Jamal’s parents are no longer living. His next-of-kin is his sister, Rita, who visits Jamal often. Sometimes Jamal and his family or friends go to watch live games of football.
Jamal has intellectual disability and in recent years, seems a little unsteady on his feet. Because of some speech difficulties, people who don’t know him well, such as attendants at the movie theatre, can find it difficult to understand Jamal’s speech. Rita is worried because lately Jamal is spending a lot of time watching TV, rather than getting out and about. Recently he even refused a suggestion by Meera and Brian to go to the movies to see Top Gun: Maverick. Rita thinks it may be because of Jamal’s mobility problems and difficulty he seems to be having in getting on a bus or train to go places. Rita has talked about her concerns to Jamal, who mentioned he would like to join a bowls club if it wasn’t too far from where he lives and if the people there were nice.
Rita talks to Jamal about applying to become a NDIS participant and Jamal says this is a good idea. They review the information available at and think that Jamal meets eligibility requirements. They complete the assessment form and are later contacted by the NDIS. They are informed that Jamal is eligible to become a NDIS participant and a planning meeting is organised.
