Walsh’s #1 Reason Children with Autism Deserve ABAWalsh’s #1 Reason Children with Autism Deserve ABA
Walsh’s number one reason why children with autism should receive ABA gave the example of her son being able to participate in church and follow the routine of the mass for self-advocacy. She says “competence begets self-advocacy”, but I’m having a hard time accepting this as an example of self-advocacy. Couldn’t self-advocacy be accomplished by teaching and providing the individual with opportunities to make choices to help communicate their wants and needs? Maybe the individual won’t be able to clearly tell what job skills they’d like to learn at a transition meeting, but being able to make choices in everyday situations can count as self-advocacy rather than learning a routine, couldn’t it? Thoughts on her example and others you can think of how “competence begets self-advocacy” to help me understand better are greatly appreciated.

Defining ABA
The role of ABA is important for parents to autistic children because of basic social communication skills it allows the child to build through treatment. The example given with the child playing ball is an example of how to encourage and strengthen social interaction in such settings. Though social interaction is encouraged, autistic children often struggle with understanding how others may feel or think. Their inability to understand how others may feel or think can apply in every setting, including playing ball. To the normal child, these are considered social cues which autistic children often do not pick up on. With this being said, ABA is encouraged for autistic children to maximize a childs learning ability, communication skills and their overall general independence.
