The current research will aim to study the preference for snack food versus home-made food in different age groups. To test whether preferences for snack type food versus homemade food change across age, 71 omnivorous mix gender respondents will be divided into two groups based on their age (Group 1 (28 participants): 18 – 35 years old and Group 2 (29 participants): above 60 years old). Participants who are following any special kind of restrictive diets are excluded from this survey. The research is aiming to test the hypothesis that food preferences and cravings change with age. Specifically, we predict that younger people tend to prefer calorie-dense snack foods more than older adults. The prediction is based on previous studies reporting that with increasing age people tend to snack less and consume fewer calories throughout the day (Abdella et al., 2017; Wurtman et al., 1988). Food images are taken from the food-pic database. There are 20 snack food images (e.g., cookies, chocolate, crisps) and 20 whole food images (e.g. fish, meat & vegetables). Participants are asked to rate their craving and the palatability of all N=40 food images using slider scales (0-100%). Participants are also asked to fill out three additional questionnaires to assess their general food-craving tendencies (FCQ-T), their current state of hunger (4 questions rated on a 9-point Likert Scale), and their healthy eating motivation (attached to this application). The experiment takes about 15 minutes to complete. Before participation, participants are asked to provide consent and fill out some demographic information (age, gender and current diet). Collected data is fully anonymous and the participants can quit the experiment at any point by closing the browser. Participants’ data is only recorded/saved after pressing the “submit” button at the end. Recruitment process: via a website, which will be shared though Facebook and other social media channels along with using the Prolifics platform.
