Write a double-spaced (12 point font) essay answering two of the following questions, using as many examples from your notes and from class as you can think of. A successful paper will correctly use the vocabulary of television music studies, and draw upon a variety of examples.
1. How does Chion’s definition of acousmatic sound apply to the television programs we have watched in class? Is his definition specific enough to describe the kinds of uses of the acousmatic we have seen in sciene fiction? What other genres are prone to the use of the acousmetre? What about syncretic acousmetre? Using exapmples from class, discuss how tape music can encourage the use of syncretic sound.
2. Describe the benefits of an orchestral score, using examples from From the Earth to the Moon, Babylon 5, and Beauty and the Beast. What sorts of specific things can those scores do that either a pop or jazz score couldn’t do? Use at least three examples from the programs themsleves. Is there a connection between the orchestral score and the new “golden age” of television (as described by Nehemas)?
3. How did jazz scores change the way television was scored? Compare and contrast several examples of jazz scoring and pop scoring in televison. How are they the same? How are they different? Again, use specific examples from the programs watched for class
