The first assessment, Self-Selected Case Study, requires students to assess a case study in relation to innovative design of a large capacity existing building in a global environment, and provide information, calculations, and advice in relation to the innovative solutions towards sustainability and improve the energy performance considering HVAC strategies. This assessment will develop independent and autonomous learning, critical and analytical thinking skills and promote knowledge and understanding of the subject within the constraints of the industry context. Introduction to the Project Coursework Requirements The coursework requires you to produce a written report (3000 words +/- 10%), It has a weighting of 50% towards your final module mark. Key elements of the project will require in-depth research and proposals. The first assessment requires students to assume that you are working as a building surveyor within a company. A client from a property development company is considering constructing a sustainable large capacity building within a 75-mile radius of the City of London. The client has no prior experience with innovative construction technologies or the impact such a development would have on the local area. The instructions given are for you to locate suitable example of an innovative designed large capacity building in a global environment. Through your research and data collection you will be required to give professional advice about sustainable developments, how the building lifecycle is enhanced using innovation, the legislation in relation to the feasibility of planning and the requisition of land and finally the procurement method towards the sustainability assessment pre-construction phase. This assessment will develop independent and autonomous learning, critical and analytical thinking skills and promote knowledge and understanding of the subject within the constraints of the industry context. 1. Locate a suitable innovative building within one of the following continents e.g. Asia, Africa, America, Europe or Australia. Please note that United Kingdom cannot be selected for this coursework. 2. You will be required to familiarise yourself with the site and building. 3. Once you have selected your building you will need to conduct detailed research to establish detail about it, including: • Modern Methods of Construction • How Innovative design improves the buildings energy performance • Innovative solutions for sustainability • HVAC Strategy Your report is to be presented with the following supporting information (as a minimum):- 1. A title page. 2. A contents page. 3. A clear introduction setting out the constraints brought about by the following: a. the building’s use b. it’s existing construction c. the site and location 4. Proposals and rationale behind your selected innovative construction technologies including demonstrating how they are compatible with the building’s existing construction. Drawings should be of relevant technical details complete with explanatory notes.
