Week 11
Please choose a topic which is relevant to public health. This must be suitable for a mixed methods approach. Undertake an in-depth exploration of the available academic literature on this topic and identify a research gap in relation to the topic which you would like to research. Please then plan a mixed methods research project to explore your topic in more depth. Your poster presentation could contain the following elements:
• Overview of topic.
• Rationale for study and identification of research gap.
• Research question and aim.
• Description and justification of the research design, methodology, epistemology, research methods and sampling. You must also outline the type of analysis you will undertake in detail.
• Potential ethical issues to be considered and recommendations of how these would be addressed when undertaking the research.
• An awareness of the limits of evidence (If you undertook this piece of research what limitations would potentially be present).
Please follow the Scientific Poster Guidance document on how to design a power-point poster in the module. Remember that your work needs to be referenced using Harvard referencing.
You will upload your e-poster along with a three-minute voice recording which gives an overview of your poster as a new discussion thread below. Your poster should be uploaded by the end of week 11. Please make sure that each poster is posted to a new thread within the main online conference thread. Students and the tutor will then read all of the posters and listen to the speeches at the beginning of week 12. Please also include a transcript of your speech with your submission.
Remember to speak clearly in your recording and at a reasonable speed – do not speak too fast. Make sure that background noise is also kept to a minimum. The aim of the voice recording is to replicate as much as possible a face to face poster presentation where the presenter briefly speaks about their poster to their audience. For more guidance on how to record your audio please follow these guidelines. (To make sure you can record, please change your editor to Atto via preferences – editor preferences. You can access all your preferences via the down arrow next to your profile image at the top right of the platform.)
Your assignment is linked to the following learning outcomes:
1. Have an advanced knowledge of the range of research designs, research methodologies, research epistemologies, sampling methods and research methods that are commonly used in health and social care research.
2. Understand the principles of qualitative and quantitative data analysis.
3. To critically explore ethical issues in health and social care research.
Academic Integrity and Plagiarism
We take academic integrity very seriously. Academic integrity means acting with fairness and honesty, giving credit to others where you are referring to their ideas or research and respecting the work of others. Plagiarism is defined as: ‘Using or copying the work of others (whether written, printed or in any other form) without proper acknowledgement’. Before you finalize your assignment take time to check that all your statements are backed up with supporting evidence, that all sources you use – whether referring to their ideas, quoting directly or paraphrasing – are correctly referenced in the text. Correct use of referencing acknowledges the academic whose work has informed yours, enables the reader to find the sources you have used and demonstrates your ability to find and analyze relevant information.
Failure to properly acknowledge the work of others is an academic offence and may result in your work incurring a penalty or, in the most serious cases, you being removed from the course for academic dishonesty.
Your poster and your written answers to the questions in the forum should not be more than 1000 words in total plus 10% in length.
Poster (~700 words)
3 x response to questions (~100 words per response)
