The distance between social location (at birth) and social destination (at death) is termed social mobility. We generally think of this as a ladder – where we hope we will increase in finance, status, and power. Please read Chapter 8 in our textbook. We will introduce you to the concept of mobility, view how much mobility exists, how it is structured. Remember, earning money is not increasing one’s social class — social class has to do with real power. Moving up the ladder is not as simple as getting a better paying job; moving up the ladder would be changing the lifestyle of you and your family for a generation.
