Assignment II: Self-Informant Personality Comparison Assignment
Typical assignment length: Cover page, 3-5 pages of text, and Reference page.
Students find it helpful to include the following headings: A. Rating scale results
(Insert Table), B. Self-Analysis, C. Analysis of Informant Ratings, D. Vazire &
Carlson (2011)
This assignment is meant to give you an opportunity to:
(1) learn more about your own personality by taking a standardized personality
measure (S Data),
(2) learn how a person who know you views your personality by having them
complete the same standardized personality measure ABOUT YOU (I Data),
(3) look at similarities (congruence) and differences (discrepancies) between how your
view yourself and how another sees you by comparing these results,
(4) examine the different facets of personality to assess which have more or lesser
congruence between these two sources of personality data.
To complete this assignment, you will need to:
(1) Get SELF-REPORT DATA: Access the IPIP-NEO Personality measure online
(2)
a. This is a 120-item measure found at the following site:
http://www.personal.psu.edu/~j5j/IPIP/ipipneo120.h…
b. It should take between 10 and 15 minutes to complete
c. Ensure to copy and save the output it provides you at the end of the survey
d. To save a copy of the output press CTRL-A (this will highlight the entire
page), then press CTRL-C (this will copy the text on the page). Open a new
document in your preferred word processor (e.g., Microsoft Word) and press CTRL-V
(this will paste the output into the new document).
(3) Get INFORMANT DATA: Ask someone else who knows you to complete the IPIP-
NEO online ABOUT YOU (use the same link as above). Be sure they are answering
PSY340 – Edited 10.10.24
the items about YOU (not themselves!).
a. You can ask anyone you know to complete this measure about you (e.g.,
roommate, friend, co-worker, parent, sibling, significant other, etc.).
b. Ensure your informant copies and saves the output the website provides at
the end of the survey and that he/she passes along the output to you.
3) The output of the IPIP-NEO is quite long! Do not be scared off. It provides a lot of
description that you will use for your write up (and it hopefully will be interesting
to read through. This is the part of the assignment where you get to learn a little bit
more of yourself).
a. Embedded in the long descriptive output is a score for each of the five
domains of the Big Five Personality structure: Openness, Contentiousness,
Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism.
b. There will also be numerous facet scores for each of those five main domains
(six facets per domain). The facet scores can help you understand yourself better and
you may choose to comment on some of these in your write-up.
(4) What to include in your write up:
a. Include the percentile scores for your SELF REPORT and INFORMANT REPORT
for the five main domains and the facet scores in the table at the end of this document.
Also include the descriptive categorization (i.e., low, average, or high). After filling in
the table included at the bottom of the assignment document (in Bb). COPY AND
PASTE THE TABLE AS THE FIRST PAGE OF YOUR WRITE UP – after your cover
page. (15% of grade)
b. Comment on what the results of the IPIP-NEO say about your personality. Look at
the detailed descriptions of your more extreme trait scores (high and/or low). Do you
think that this provided an accurate description of your personality? (15% grade)
c. Evaluate the scores from your Informant’s report. What are the areas of greatest
and least agreement between raters/sources? For this section, ensure to state how
your collateral reporter is related to you. Do you think this person’s relationship to
you impacted the scores? Do you think that scores would change if someone else
took the IPIP-NEO? (25% of grade)
d. Read the accompanying article by Vazire and Carlson (2011). Discuss what they
mean by the concepts of ‘blind spots’ and ‘ observability’? Describe a few examples
of potential evidence of these factors at work in your results. (30% of grade)
e. Follow APA formatting guidelines for your paper (15% of grad. Rating scale results (Insert Table)
B. Self-Analysis
C. Analysis of Informant Ratings
