SCENARIO
The administrator of the hospital where you work voices concerns about the increased incidence of CAUTI’s (Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections) over the past quarter. The director of nursing (DON) states that the hospital has a policy that was developed to reduce the incidence of CAUTI’s and asks you to provide suggestions for a quality improvement initiative that will enforce compliance with the current policy. Director of Education, you are aware that UTIs are the most common type of healthcare-associated infection, according to the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). You advise the committee that national statistics report approximately 75% are associated with a urinary catheter and that these infections can be reduced with education (CDC, 2017).
You have been asked by the committee to create Quality Improvement guidelines for staff education that focus on the prevention of Catheter-associated UTIs (CAUTIs) and other types of healthcare-associated infections. During the next quarterly meeting, you will present an education plan for an in-service to all healthcare personnel who care for patients with catheters and an in-service for hospital leadership. INSTRUCTIONS
Using the CDC’s (2017) evidence-based recommendations for CAUTI infections create an education plan for in-service for hospital staff and leadership that include procedures for insertions, maintenance, and removal of urinary catheters to avoid CAUTIs.
Day 1:
Create an agenda for staff that includes quality improvement guidelines for staff education that focuses on the prevention of CAUTIs. Include the information to be discussed this day, why epidemiology is so essential, and how this intervention will impact global initiatives for improvement of CAUTI infections. For the leadership day, create an agenda for leadership. Include how you will present the importance of leadership on compliance and discuss how the initiative will improve the healthcare environment. Describe strategies leadership will use to maintain compliance with the initiative.
Day 2:
Refer to the comparative data from the Center for Disease Control on CAUTI infections. Use this data as supportive data to provide evidence of the epidemiologic and global need to implement the initiative in your institution.
Describe how these statistics are collected and how you will use your electronic health record to report and analyze data for your institution to meet national epidemiological goals of decreasing CAUTI infections.
Describe what types of emerging technology you will implement for your initiative. Examples may include electronic alerts within the EMR, electronic bladder stimulation devices, biofilms, etc.
Create an evaluation tool or identify an existing evaluation tool that will measure the effectiveness of the plan.
