Professor instructions–> Building on the artwork you selected for your formal analysis assignment, you will expand the analysis you begin with descriiption into a thesis-driven paper of 3-5 pages (standard font, size 12 pt, .docx, .pages, or .pdf file). Your argument should start with a clearly articulated thesis drawn from
visual analysis. You may support your analysis by drawing on additional historical, artistic, or theoretical sources (including those we have looked at together in class) but outside research is not required. Similarly, you may make comparisons between your artwork and another work, although the focus of the essay should remain on the artwork you’ve selected for your formal analysis.
This is not a research paper. Rather, this is an exercise to see how you engage with and interpret different aspects of a work of art. Arguments about symbolism, iconography, or historical significance are not the point of this exercise and would demand robust research to prove. Should you find yourself making these claims, I urge you to reconsider the direction of your paper. If you do include these aspects into your paper, proper citations must be used following a consistent style guide (Chicago Manual of Style, for instance). These should be in the form of footnotes or parenthetical citations with a corresponding Works Cited List at the end of the analysis.
