The book “ A Rasin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry is about a less privileged family living paycheck to paycheck when a $10,000 life insurance check is coming after Walter’s father passed. Walter’s sister Beneatha is hardworking and will get some of the money to pay for her medical school. While Walter wants the money to cheat his way into making an Alcohol store. When Walter goes behind everyone’s back and steals the money to give to a shady guy and ends up losing it. Walter Lee Younger is the Father of Travis Younger, the husband of Rosa Younger, the son of “Mama”, and the brother of Beneatha. Walter younger goes from being an Antagonist to a Protagonist showing integrity is more important than advancement.
At the beginning of the story, we see Walter described as lazy, childish, and selfish. As he doesn’t have any work ethic. He expects success and wealth to be handed to him. He plans to open a Liquor store with some of the money from his father’s life insurance which doesn’t even belong to him. On top of the fact, he can’t even do that the right way he also plans on taking shortcuts while making his business. “… don’t nothing happen for you in this world ‘less you pay someone off!” (pg.33) This shows how Walter has the wrong idea about how the world works and how someone becomes successful.
In the middle of the book, we see manipulative behavior from Walter. He tries to make everyone else feel bad including his very own Mother just for some money. We see how he values money over his own flesh and blood. “You run our lives like you want to. It was your money and you did what you wanted with it…so you butchered up a dream of mine…” (pg 95) . We see Walter manipulating his own mother here in hopes he can make her feel bad for spending her own money. Even though that money was spent on a new house for the family. This clearly depicts how Walter shows manipulative behavior in the middle of the book.
At the end of the book, we see a change in character for Walter. He shows that he is selfless, courageous, and caring. After a racist man comes to their door persuading them to not move into their white neighborhood. He says that the people of the neighborhood all put in money to reimburse the Younger family in hopes they would move. Walter just lost a lot of money after getting scammed, and the people of the neighborhood were offering to give more than the value of the house. Looking at past events Walter has presented himself as the type of person to take the money. “And we have decided to move into our house because my father – my father – he earned it for us brick by brick.” (pg 148). This shows how Walter has a change in character towards the end of the book with this defiant act.
Walter shows major character development throughout the book “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry. In the beginning, we see a lazy man-child who is all talk and not willing to put the work in for his family. In the middle, he does start “working” even though his self-character hasn’t improved as he shows acts of manipulation, selfishness, and greed as he robs his own family. But in the end, we see when it comes to the family he makes the right decision. This proves Walter younger goes from being an Antagonist to a Protagonist showing integrity is more important than advancement.”
