You are required to complete an essay of at least 1000 words that reflects on all of the course readings/videos from the Infectious disease course section. The essay is your opportunity to synthesize your understanding of how social and political dynamics affect infectious disease and how cultural groups experience infectious disease.
In the essay, students should identify what they believe are the most salient messages and arguments presented by the authors of the readings/videos, and develop a cogent thesis and argument. Strong essays will compare, contrast, and analyze multiple readings/videos and concepts, and provide personal reflections related to the arguments presented in the course materials.
Below are some guiding prompts, but students don’t have to address these, and can discuss other compelling issues in their essays:
What information/data on infectious disease was most compelling to you? Why?
How are neoliberalism and colonialism discussed or implicated in the readings/videos?
What evidence do the authors present that critique or challenge the dominant narratives of politicians and governments?
How could additional socio-cultural anthropological research advance our knowledge of the subject matter?
Students should also reflect on their own experience with infectious disease: do your observations from your own life align with the findings from the readings?
General
Do not include long (>3 sentence) quotes to increase your word count. Write in your own words as much as possible to make your point.
Feel free to bring in ideas or examples from outside sources, just make sure you cite them, and include them in a reference list. Plagiarism will not receive credit.
It is expected that students will conduct a thorough grammar and spelling check of their work.
