Assignment Question
Choose one of the following topics for your paper: 1) Adapting short fiction into film: Compare/contrast the short story “The Greatest Gift” with the film adaptation of the story. Consider addressing one or more of the following questions in your paper: Do the central ideas/themes of the short story remain central ideas/themes in the film? What literary elements does the storywriter employ to create the central theme, and do these elements of fiction carry over into the mise en scène of the film? If so, how? If not, what takes their place?
2) In the film, It’s a Wonderful Life, a number of conflicts drive the plot. One conflict is the individual versus society, i.e. George Bailey’s dreams and desires versus the needs and demands of his family and community. A second conflict the film develops might be expressed in terms of the average man versus powerful entities (in our time, we often call this conflict “Main Street v. Wall Street”). Choose one of these conflicts and explore how the film develops and resolves the conflict through the course of the film to create its theme. What do you see as the central idea or theme of the film?
