– Read all of Growing Up
– Using at least FIVE examples from the book, answer ONE of the following questions:
1. Russell Baker’s mother instills a very specific idea of the American dream in him – work hard, take your opportunities, and you’ll do fine. How far is that the case with Russell Baker and other family members in the Great Depression, and were the challenges the same for each of them, in achieving that American dream?
2. What major historical changes, trends, and events (i.e. the Great Depression, FDR’s election, the New Deal, Pearl Harbor, WWII, Civil Rights demonstrations, and international political debates, but only pick three to four from this list) does Russell witness, and how do they influence day-to-day life?
Format your essay according to the following guidelines:
– Please title your essay! Center your title at the top of the first page
– Please put the number of the prompt you are answering at the start of your essay
– Page numbers and your name in the top right corner header
– Multiple paragraphs and a total of approximately 1000-1200 words (Minimum 3 FULL pages)
– Times New Roman, 12pt font
– Thesis statement at the end of the introduction
– Double spaced
– MUST USE AT LEAST FIVE EXAMPLES FROM GROWING UP
– Citations for all quotes and direct examples. Citations should be in parentheses at the end of the sentence and include last name of the author book page number.

– Be clearly written and well-organized, with an introduction, body paragraphs to support your argument, and a conclusion.
– Include five specific examples, which you use to answer the assignment questions.
– Provide analysis of these examples which explain how each one supports your argument.
– Provide proper citations for quotations and examples.
An “A” essay will avoid the following:
– Contractions (“didn’t” “wasn’t” etc.)
– First person (“I think” “We should” etc.)
– Slang (use of slash marks, informal idioms)
– Grammar, spelling, and style errors
