Background & Context “The United States detonated two nuclear weapons over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945, respectively. The two bombings killed between 129,000 and 226,000 people, most of whom were civilians, and remain the only uses of nuclear weapons in armed conflict” (Wikipedia). Dr. Michihiko Hachiya (1903 e – 1980) was a Japanese medical practitioner who survived the Hiroshima bombing in 1945 and kept a diary of his experience. His account describes the devastation of suffering of the victims of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima.
