The DSM system of classification has an important historical context. Once it was introduced, researchers and clinicians have discovered reasons to modify and/or improve it’s content, resulting in at least five iterations of the original manual. From the research you’ve done on mental illness and diagnosis, explain the history of what occurred pre-DSM (or in the earlier revisions of it) with regard to diagnosis and/or treatment of people with mental illness up until the DSM 5. Consider the changes that have occurred since the publication of the DSM 5 (i.e., COVID 19, substance use, political unrest, diversity, equity, and inclusion). What do you think needs to change/improve as you continue on your path as a mental health counselor?
This assignment must be two or more pages in length, and your examples must show the historical context, the importance of having a systematized approach to diagnosis, and implications for future iterations of the DSM based on changes in our world. You must also include how these changes intersect with diversity, equity, and inclusion for all clients. Please include proper APA citations and a reference page at the end of your paper.
