The purpose of this assignment is to become familiar with different cultural practices related to Pediatric care and to identify how traditional medicine supports chronic illness, abuse, substance abuse and mental illness within the selected cultural group impact children care.

Cultural Competency Assignment
Requirements:
This is an individual project.
The student will be assigned a cultural/ethnic group by your Instructor. Some examples: African, Amish/Mennonite, Asian, Latino, Irish, Jewish, Middle Eastern, Greek, Alaska Native, and Native American.
The students will research their assigned cultural/ethnic group to determine:
Beliefs/values regarding children care relating to chronic illness, abuse, substance abuse and mental illness (for example dietary, environmental, hygienic practices/restrictions during illness, Substance Abuse, and seeking healthcare).
Customs/traditions related to children chronic illness, abuse, substance abuse and mental illness.
Languages most common to the group if non-English speaking or English is a second language. Use and interpretation of verbal and non-verbal methods of communication.
Sources of emotional and physical support for children with chronic illness, abuse, substance abuse and mental illness.
Dangers: related to child sex trafficking, war, or homelessness
Primary healthcare decision-maker.
Practice Recommendations – Considers the cultural needs when offering practice suggestions that will meet both the specific culture as well as the standard nursing protocol.
The students will submit a Power Point slide 10-15 (including title and reference pages). See Grading Criteria below for guidelines. The PowerPoint Presentation must have a minimum of 2 current (within 5 years) scholarly articles is expected. Older literature will be accepted with the approval of the instructor.
