The complex interrelationships among individuals, groups, and institutions means American society will always face social issues. Individuals and groups often look to their leaders to provide guidance as they choose what to believe or how to respond to the issues they face.

Leaders are found in nearly all institutions in society. To effectively guide people toward solutions and actions that lead to social change, leaders need to gather information and communicate their recommendations. Sociological theories can help leaders understand and explain issues to others in ways that promote solutions and lead to social change.

This assignment sets out a scenario in which you hope to lead others in solving social issues. You’ll use valid information and your knowledge of sociological theory to support your perspective.

Before you begin, look at the assignment rubric so you’re aware of the requirements, and be sure to reach out to your instructor if you have any questions.

Scenario:
You have been nominated as a candidate for a leadership position on your city’s council. The selection committee has asked you to present your thoughts on local social issues at an upcoming community meeting. They have provided a list of social challenges and have asked candidates to talk about their perspectives.

To prepare to talk with the council, take the following steps:
Select 1 sociological theory that best reflects your view on the social issues listed. You will use this theory as you discuss the social issues in your community.
Select 2 topics below:
1 social problem related to health or education in your community
1 social problem related to crime and social justice in your community
1 social problem associated with a type of inequality in your community: economic, age, race/ethnicity, gender, or sexual inequality

For each topic you select, do the following:
Identify the topic you selected and summarize why it represents a social problem in your community.
Identify the sociological theory you selected and discuss how you would apply that theory to a proposed solution for each problem.

Select 1 format for your remarks:
A written speech of 700 to 1050 words that addresses your selected topics and responses
A recorded video of 4 to 7 minutes addressing your selected topics and responses
Note: You do not have to read the question prompts in your video, but you may. If you read the question prompts, that does not count toward the video time.

Write or record your speech in response to these topics.

Include information from reliable, factual sources to support your remarks. Refer to this week’s learning activities for guidance. You can find information from the U.S. Census Bureau about the population and economy in each state by scrolling down the page of Data Profiles.

Cite references to support your assignment.

Format your citations according to APA guidelines. Do this to the best of your ability or use a citation generator if you need help.

Submit your speech or a video link for your assignment.

I dont need the video portion – I will create my own video
