Task: Find an advertisement from a magazine and reflect on how gender, race, sexuality, class, ability are depicted. Subvert this message by creating a counter advertisement that challenges the sexism, racism, and classism, and other power structures in the original advertisement. The counter advertisement you created will be your artifact for this scrapbook. Add text and alternative images to culture jam this advertisement. Then, you will write a written analysis that explains how you are changing the meaning of the advertisement.
In lieu of creating your own advertisement, you can check out Adbusters and use one of their spoofs (just be sure to cite it in your paper). Adbusters magazine is one of the best-known publications producing counter-cultural messages that satirize existing advertisements to challenge the naturalness of their messages, such as “Drinking alcohol is sexy” or “Buying a nice car will get you a hot chick!” Culture jams are created artistically, using humor, irony, and satire. Culture jamming is intended to open people’s eyes to the extent to which the media control what we think.
If culture jamming is not your jam, you can opt to use another activist tactic such as creating a zine page, or writing a blog entry.
Use the internet and create a short biography for one feminist from one of the three waves. In your 200-300 word analytical response include how this feminist defined their key issue of concern, strategies, and tactics for their activism. Feel free to be creative with your biography!
Purpose: Feminist activism remains a central component of feminist and social justice movements. This scrapbook entry is an opportunity for you to practice culture jamming, an activist tactic of third wave feminism. You were introduced to culture jamming with the Guerrilla Girls.
