Take a position either for or against one of the topics listed below, and defend your position using at least four sources
not found in assigned course reading material, one of which must be a primary source (i.e. newspaper, diary, interview,
first-hand account). Your position (the side that you base your argument upon) should be grounded in historical
evidence. Always back up your arguments with historical evidence for a stronger paper. For more information on the
craft of historical research, please refer to this webpage: .
The topics you can choose from include:
• The leisured society did not really happen
• Consumerism has spoiled the leisure experience
• Technology has not enhanced leisure
• Increased leisure time is bad for the economy
• Suburbs have a negative impact on society
• Travel/tourism is bad for the host culture
• The Canadian Parks system does not serve the
needs of Canadian citizens
This paper should be between 1500 & 1750 words.
Please note: Most of these topics are very broad, impossible to cover in the suggested word length. It is hoped that students choosing this option will focus the paper by making the above statement a starting point, rather than a thesis
statement. This paper should be in Chicago format. Wikipedia (or any ‘Wiki’) can only be used as a starting point and
should not be a main source for your paper.
