One of the main goals of the age-friendly movement is to eliminate physical and social barriers for older adults. Age-friendly communities support policies, services, systems, technologies, and products that promote and enhance
residents’ physical and mental health. Social inclusion gives older adults a sense of purpose, accomplishment, and belonging to the community. It allows older adults to stay active and contribute to society’s development based on their needs, preferences, and abilities. Social participation fosters ties that prevent isolation. Age-friendly
environments enable people to stay active and connected and contribute to their community’s economic, social,
and cultural life. Becoming age-friendly can make a city a city of choice for all generations – a great place to live,
have a family and grow older in. Age-friendly communities use policies that help older adults live within their means, such as reduced transit fares, income- or age-based caps on rent, and affordable healthcare options.
