By drawing on topic areas introduced in the Human Behaviour module (health psychology, learning, motivation, social theories, and habit formation) you will conduct research and write-up a research report that will explore why unversity students opt to take the evaluator instead of the stairs? What are the variables that would increase use of the stairs?
To conduct and write your research, you will:
• Review the literature relevant to the topic including theories related to, health psychology, learning theories, social theories, motivation, and habit formation. This section should be approximately 400 words. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to search the literature:
1. Search the existing literature on the topic. Start the process by clarifying the research question you would like answered (e.g., How to increase stair climbing amongst unversity students?). Your next step is to use your research question to help you identify keywords (e.g. Stair use, setting Behavioural modelling, choice behaviour, health promotion, habit formation health promotion, physical activity, stairs)
2. Now that you have your keywords you need to decide which databases to search. It is advisable to search several databases to make sure you do not miss a key paper on your topic. A good place to start is Google Scholar, which will search a wider set of resources.
3. You will need to evaluate the literature you find for quality and relevance. A quick way to check for quality is to check the number of times the paper has been cited. You can find this information on any search engine you use (see screenshot below). As for relevance, read the abstract to determine whether it is relevant to your research topic.
4. When conducting a literature search recording the information you find in an organised manner is essential. Search engines allows you to save your searches. It is also good practice to keep a reference list of relevant articles you found.
