I am choosing the specific time of 1978. I chose this time because in 1978 the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. This act gave pregnant women more protection in the workplace. This act has given more protection for pregnant women but pregnant women still deal with employers treating them unfairly due to their pregnancy (Eaton, B.L. 2019). Pregnancy discrimination includes hiring, firing, pay, training, benefits, and all and any terms of the employment (U.S. Department Of Labor, n.d.). There are employers who fire women after telling them they are pregnant. Some employers do not give pregnant women reasonable accommodations.
These changes have affected my chosen career as a probation and parole officer because when I get pregnant I cannot be fired, paid less money, or discriminated against in any way for being pregnant or any medical condition related to pregnancy. I cannot even be discriminated against if I apply for the job while I am pregnant. I think this is wonderful because pregnant women are human too, we need to be protected. Being pregnant is a medical condition, so we should be treated as so. I know that a lot of employers have even given breast feeding mothers time to pump milk for their babies, which is amazing! I think my future employer will continue to evolve as gender roles continue to change. I think this because my job will be through the government themselves, so laws and acts will come from them.
