The scope of practice is a set of activities that are allowed to be performed by individual healthcare practitioners within a specific profession. The scope of nursing practice gives the parameters and boundaries within which the healthcare providers and nurses practice. This enables the profession to clearly articulate its practice parameters. These parameters are important as they serve as a set of guidelines for what is appropriate in each person’s role. It will also clearly define what is out of the scope of practice of themselves or their colleagues and it protects them and their patients.
Some of the communication skills necessary for all healthcare professionals include verbal communication and speaking clearly while maintaining a professional tone. Non-verbal communication skills are just as important as verbal ones and can show respect. This includes eye contact, being aware of body language, and smiling when appropriate. It is important to show compassion to fellow healthcare workers and patients as well as treat them all with dignity and respect.
