What connections do you see between positions taken in the two works? What differences? It might help to make an outline that lists points of agreement/disagreement. Don’t stop there. You’re not going to write an essay that simply says to the reader, “These two viewpoints are different” or “These two arguments have these things in common.” Your goal is to report on selective areas of comparison/contrast to make some larger point: “A good comparison/contrast essay, however, does more than just list similarities and differences—when done well, it can become a vehicle for generating a unique and creative synthesis of different ideas” (Austin 615). You may decide to argue that one position makes a stronger argument than the other, or provides more compelling support regarding a particular situation. Use this as an opportunity to construct the foundation for an argument you intend to make in the research paper—both your own view and a counter claim. Your paper should be three pages and include an additional works cited page, and it should follow MLA format. For works cited entries, use the citation tabs within the library’s databases.
