Web Design I – Week #1 Assignment

Getting Setup
1. View the cPanel video tutorial.

2. Download a second browser if you don’t already have one. Take a screen shot showing that you have two browsers on your computer and paste that into your Word document.

3. Review the requirements for the final project. We’ll work on each of the concepts from week to week and you’ll add to your site throughout the term.

4. Next, create a first page for your site and include the following: Your name and the course ID, A brief plan for your project site – topic, target audience, and how you will employ features based on the project requirements laid out as a list of goals for each week from 2-8. Apply basic html tags such as doctype, charset, head, body, footer. Remember to close all tags. Experiment with formatting tags like headings (h1, h2, etc), bold, italic, and so on.

5. Once completed, upload your newly created webpage to the public_html folder on your cPanel account, use HTML Edit (see cPanel tutorial) to determine your page URL. Do not click Edit on this screen – the resulting URL is internal to your cPanel so only you can view it. You want the published page that everyone can see. The URL in the box with the blue outline is the correct one (red arrow below).

Alternatively, once you know your primary domain or base URL (the part from http to .com), you can simply add the name and extension for the page you created separating the two using a forward slash. For example, is my primary domain, if I create a page named cycle and load it to the public_html folder using the File Manager in cPanel, then the URL would be

6. Test this URL in your browser to be sure it works (not your local file created in Notepad). If not, double check the page is loaded in public_html and that the file type is html. Once you have the page loading in your browser, take a screenshot. Submit the screenshot as well as the html file along with the URL to your page.

7. If you have problems with any of the above, contact your instructor BEFORE the assignment is due. They can help you work through issues so you are set up for week 2.

8. You may be able to get more than one of these items or even all of them in one screen shot. It is fine to get multiple requirements into one screen shot. Please do not submit them as pictures. It is much easier for professors to view Word or PDF files in Blackboard. Paste all of your screenshots into ONE Word or PDF document and submit that file as your assignment for this week.
