2. Watch the following Harvard video on the importance of sleep. You can start it just prior to the 1:30 minute mark if you want to save a few minutes of the intro.

3. Read the Tip Sheet on Positive Talk (Found under the Resources tab). (I have attached the tip sheet on positive talk)
Choose 1 (ONE) of the following four options:
Sleep – Complete a sleep log and sleep diary for one week (7 days in a row). Document any benefits or challenges using the log provided. https://www.sleepfoundation.org/sites/default/files/inline-files/SleepDiaryv6.pdf. (I have attached the sleep diary incase you choose this option).
After completing the sleep diary, answer the following questions:
i.What challenges do you/have you faced with sleep?
ii. Are you engaging in sufficient sleep to support optimal cognitive processes?
iii. Are you spending significant time lying in bed without being able to fall asleep? If so, what solutions do you have for this?
Exercise – Commit to engaging in an exercise regime (walking, running, gym, anything of your choice) for 3-4 days in a one-week period. Create a log that includes the following categories:
i)How you felt prior to exercise (ie: tired, lack of energy and not feeling like I want to workout, or struggling with content, decided to change things up,, etc)
ii) How you felt post -workout
iii) How your studies went that day. Was there a difference – pro or con on how your studies went that day? Any other observations or comments as per your experience?
Meditation/Mindfulness – Commit to engaging in a meditation/mindfulness regime (yoga, meditation app, deep breathing exercises, anything of your choice) for 3-4 days in a one-week period. Create a log that includes the following categories:
i) How you felt prior to the activity (ie: tired, lack of energy and not feeling like I want to work out, struggling with content, decided to change things up, etc.)
ii) How you felt post-activity.
iii) How the activity went that day? Was there a difference – pro or con on how your studies went that day? Any other observations or comments as per your experience?
Positive Self-Talk -Negative Thought Stopping – For one week, use the Self-Talk Log provided in the Resources folder. Answer the following:
i.Were you surprised at the frequency of any negative thoughts?
ii. Was there a specific time or theme to the negative thoughts?
iii. Did you find a difference – pro or con on how things went after replacing with positive thoughts? Any other observations or comments as per your experience?
Summary- Hand In (ensure you cover all questions and material for full points)
Fill in or create the log/chart as per your chosen activity above. Reflect on any thoughts, the value obtained or even any challenges you faced. Include the questions stated above as well as summarize and reflect on the following:
Comment on the Harvard article and video on sleep. What are your takeaways as a medical student and your future as a medical doctor?
Was there a difference – pro or con on how your studies went that day or week? Note any other observations or comments as per engaging in the process. What do you need to prioritize?
How do you plan to maintain school/life balance in these months, if not years, ahead?
Do you have a “go-to” (person, place, thing) that helps you reset in stressful times?
