EDA 543 – School Personnel School Leadership Challenge SLC#1
A Descriiption, Comparison and Analysis of the Recruitment, Interviewing, Selection and Induction
Procedures for Support Staff in a Selected School District
Background
School districts often have differing practices the recruitment, interviewing, selection and induction (orientation) of
various support staff areas in a school district. Furthermore, some school districts also lack consistency in following
their own established practices. Equally important, school districts must follow the various state and federal laws
in these processes.
Assignment
Students will develop and submit a paper describing, comparing, and analyzing the recruitment, interviewing,
selection, and induction procedures for support staff in a selected school. Students will collect information
regarding the district’s processes. The paper should include sections on recruitment, interviewing, selection, and
induction/orientation. The analytical paper should include a final detailed section providing recommendations for
improving the various processes. Students shall respond to the questions below in the order listed. Questions
should be integrated into a paper – not simply providing an answer to each question. The questions should be used
as a guide for writing, not as the sole focus.
1. Briefly describe the recruiting, interviewing, selection, and induction procedures for support staff positions.
(If processes for support staff positions vary, select one area to discuss/analyze.)
a. Are processes followed consistently?
b. How does the district ensure it is hiring the best qualified staff?
2. Analyze the procedures regarding compliance with New York State and federal law, the Taylor Law, Civil
Service Law, and New York State Education Law.
a. How do they comply?
b. Are there areas where improvement is needed?
3. What are some detailed recommendations for improving the processes?
4. What are your final thoughts on the district recruitment, interviewing, selection and induction processes?

recommended range) not including title page or references.

restatement of the assignment.
3. The analytical paper should incorporate multiple citations from each assigned module readings from Public
Personnel Management (Klinger, et. al.); School Law; Video Point Presentation: Personnel 1 – Taylor Law;
supplemental readings, and the PowerPoint slides.
4. The paper should also incorporate additional readings/citations from other external sources.
5. Paper should follow all writing requirements found in Part 2: Supplemental Materials : Expectations
(“Distinguished” Rubric) for Written Work, Presentations & Course Performance.
6. The last paragraph(s) should have a strong close, including any observations and conclusions.
7. The analytical paper should be submitted through Canvas to the professor by the due date listed.
Strategies
1. Integrate the various literature, readings, textbooks, etc., throughout the analytical paper.
2. Do not focus on merely describing, but take it farther through critical analysis.
3. Review Board of Education policies, procedures, etc. – cite and include as appropriate.
4. Interview several school staff who regularly participate in hiring or orientation procedures.
5. Conduct a literature search on the topics as additional background information.
