The review should focus not on the film as art, but as a medium for representing history — and, in some cases, trying to change history. Your review should include an analysis of how the film relates to the historical record, and how the filmmakers might have used artistic license in changing the chronology and/or characters. You should also discuss the context in which the film was produced, and the reception from both audiences and critics. As you watch the movie, you may want to keep the following questions in mind:
How would Japanese audiences in the mid-1950s have understood the film’s allusions to
nuclear energy and nuclear weapons? Is Gojira a victim or a monster? What, if anything, does
the representation of Gojira and its reception tell us about (Japanese) attitudes to nuclear
bombs in 1954? Would the film have looked similar if it was made in 1946?
