This assignment requires research, so allow yourself some extra time. For this assignment you will use at least two secondary sources to support your analysis. The short story is the primary source, and articles and essays about the short story are secondary sources. Rather than “cheat” websites like Lit Charts or Sparknotes, find a scholarly secondary source from the PHSC Electronic Library Resources (ELR). These library databases are an excellent resource and they will provide the MLA citation for you. Click on Electronic Library Resources > Open in New Tab > Subject > Literature, and then begin your search on one of the databases. There are several literature databases, but Bloom’s Literature is my preference because it is very user-friendly. As with all literary critiques, quotes from the story should be used to strengthen and support your analysis, and should be punctuated correctly (see sample essays in the textbook for examples). You should also quote from the secondary sources. See Norton Chapters 32 – 34 (p. 2033 – 2083) for guidelines on integrating quotations and secondary sources into your essay. The ELR databases should provide the citations for you, which you need to copy and paste onto a “Works Cited” page at the end of your essay. See example of Works Cited at the end of your essay in Norton, p. 2083. Assignment: Discuss the use of symbolism as it contributes to theme in one of the following stories: Definition of theme: Generally the theme of a story is “what it is about”…but more specifically the theme of a story should provide some insight about life, human nature, or a commentary on society. In other words, it is the “take away” that the author wants us to think about after reading the story. It should be universally applicable, regardless of your personal identity or background. Good literature opens our minds to realities about life and living that we may not have considered before. “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” 94 “A Rose for Emily,” 692 “Good People,” 232 “Jury of Her Peers,” 596 “Araby,” p. 284 “The Things They Carried,” 638 This essay must be in MLA format Times Roman 12, name and page number on right up
