2. Speech act theory posits three different types of acts to an utterance. What are these and how are they supposed to work? Do we really need three types?
3. Collavin (2011: 281-285) discusses the causality of speech acts. That is, how do speakers produce speech acts and how do listeners interpret them.? This brings a focus on the issue of conventionalization (of what sort) and idiosyncrasy (idiomaticity). How do you think this works?
4. Politeness (following Brown and Levinson, 1987) has generally been used as a reason for the way people formulate utterances. What are some of the supposed variables that affect politeness.
5. Although this is barely mentioned in the readings this week, research in the learning of speech acts in an L2 has largely centered on how functions are achieved in the TL. What are functions and what are some of the different types of functions?
