Knowledge of the students’ strengths, interests, preferences, needs, and performance on transition goals, aligned activities, and coursework are major considerations when working with students with moderate to severe disabilities in secondary settings. Educators must also have knowledge of the options, services, and possible settings their students will most likely transition to once they leave high school. An understanding of the skills needed for success after high school should be used to guide planning and instruction. Alignment to interests and skills will promote more successful transition opportunities.
For this assignment, create a 12-15 slide digital presentation for classified staff, certified faculty, and related service providers who provide services to students’ with moderate to severe disabilities in your area.
The presentation should:
Describe 2-3 strategies for evaluating the strengths, interests, preferences, and needs of students with moderate to severe disabilities. Include discussion of how each strategy and its evaluation results will affect transition goals, aligned activities, and/or coursework.
Provide a description of specific living, work, and/or day-treatment placement options available to students with moderate to severe disabilities and their families in your local area.
Provide a list of 3-5 online resources for special education staff who support students with moderate to severe disabilities in developing and accomplishing postsecondary transition goals.
