Formulate a hypothesis test that answers the research question “Is the mean ACT score of the randomly selected sample greater than the known mean ACT score of the population?”

Words: 495
Pages: 2
Subject: Uncategorized

Complete the following exercises using the data provided. Make sure to clearly answer all of the questions with as much information as you can provide! Submit an Excel file that contains your data and calculations AND a Word document that contains answers to the questions!

PART 1: Descriptive Statistics
A) Using the USM PROJECT 1 DATADownload USM PROJECT 1 DATA, type in your name to randomly generate a set of data AND a group. Copy and paste your data into a new spreadsheet (if needed) and record which group was randomly chosen. (You will use the group later). Name has been entered in the attached document
B) Round all of your scores to whole numbers and remove any scores above 36. This may change your sample size!
C) Generate a frequency distribution with 9 total classes and a class width of 4.
D) Generate a histogram for the data using a bin width of 4.
E) Generate summary statistics for the ACT scores using the Descriptive Statistics test in Excel.

Answer the following questions:
1. Which class contains the most scores? What classes contain the second and third most? Does there appear to be any scores that are very far from the mean?
2. Does the data appear to be symmetric in the histogram? Is there evidence of any skew in the data?
3. Using the descriptive statistics you generated, provide as much relevant information about the sample as possible.

PART 2:
Hypothesis Testing

As a researcher, you want to compare your sample of ACT scores to a known population value. Using the group that was randomly generated, compare your sample to the known characteristics of your group provided in the National Norms ACT. For example, if you randomly selected “Reading”, then your population mean would be 21.2 and your population standard deviation would be 6.9.

A) Formulate a hypothesis test that answers the research question “Is the mean ACT score of the randomly selected sample greater than the known mean ACT score of the population?” Write the null and alternative hypotheses in BOTH symbols and words!
B) Determine whether the test is two-tailed or one-tailed, the test statistic, and the p-value.
C) Make a decision regarding your hypotheses and discuss your results.

1. In your Word document, provide an explanation of the entire hypothesis test which includes your specific research question, hypotheses, results, and brief discussion.

Focus on information acquired from the hypothesis test and conclusions that you can infer from the results.

BONUS: Write a brand new research question that you could answer using this type of statistical test! Be as specific as possible!
