Critical thinking and evidence-based practice directly correlate in nursing practice to achieve positive patient outcomes. According to Julie K. Dean (2018), evidence-based practice is defined as the integration of clinical expertise, the most up-to-date research, and patient’s preferences to formulate and implement best practices for patient care. Dynamics in nursing also defines critical thinking as all or part of the process of questioning, analysis, synthesis, interpretation, inference, inductive and deductive reasoning, intuition, application, and creativity (2018). Critical thinking entails using knowledge and skills acquired to develop an effective nursing care plan using the nursing process to achieve positive patient outcomes. Nurses must be able to use evidence-based practice when developing a nursing care plan to ensure success.

While on duty, critical thinking must be performed efficiently and effectively in a timely manner to ensure positive patient outcomes. Nurses must stay up-to-date with the latest research in evidence-based practice to implement during the critical thinking process. According to Diamond-Fox and Bone (2021), critical thinking requires one to gather relevant Information, formulate questions and problems, consider all odds, and evaluate relevant information. These steps, along with others, are important for positive patient outcomes. Evidence-based practice is considered a practice because we do not know how effective it can be unless it is performed in nursing practice with use of critical thinking to avoid negative outcomes.
