In March 2019, aviation authorities around the world grounded the Boeing 737 MAX passenger airliner in the aftermath of two fatal plane crashes. All 737 MAX airplanes a total of 387 worldwide serving 8,600 flights each week for 59 airlines have remained grounded while Boeing addresses the problems that caused the crashes. In January 2020, Boeing suspended production of the aircraft, and by April 2020, customers had canceled nearly 200 orders for the MAX. The crisis at Boeing has only intensified with the COVID-19 pandemic, as the company contends with both depressed demand for air travel (thus airplanes) and indefinite delays in recertification, pilot training, and production. As of March 2020, the grounding of the 737 MAX is estimated to have cost Boeing $18.6 billion. Suffering damage to its reputation, finances, and ratings, Boeing is facing the greatest crisis in its storied 100+ year history.
