The biggest assignment for this class is the research and writing of a 10 to 15 page term paper on
a topic related to the history of slavery and the slave trade in Africa. While we will range
broadly in the class looking at comparative systems of slavery and the role of slavery in creating
the African diaspora, I do want the paper to focus on Africa. Topics can include a review of the
history of the slave trade in any particular region in Africa. They may also include broader
economic issues that arise as a result of the slave trade. They should not include topics on the
history of slavery in the United State or the Americas generally.
Please be aware of the due dates concerning the paper:
September 15: Topic statement due. Please prepare a paragraph or two outlining your chosen
topic and also any sources you are already identified. I will provide feedback, including in some
cases helping you alter the topic.
October 6: Bibliography due. I would like to see around 20 sources you have identified
concerning your topic. Most will be secondary or scholarly sources.
November 3: Draft of term paper due. I want to see where you are and give you feedback.
December 1: Final paper due
