Please NOTE:
• Your discussion should NOT be simply a restatement of “factoids” drawn from your research.
• Your discussion should NOT be simply a parroted, restatement of what is written in your sources.
• Your discussion SHOULD BE entirely in your own words and consist entirely of your own thoughts upon the information you learned from your research.
• I will know the difference between what your discussion Should BE and what it should NOT be, and I will grade it accordingly.
DUE DATE: You will turn in this homework in class, in person, on Wednesday, March 16.

Choose one of the topic options below.
1. Apart from the well-known religious laws, hallal and kosher, how are Muslims, Christians, and Jews required or advised or encouraged to treat animals? Explain. What did the Prophet Muhammad say or do in this regard? What did Jesus (Isa) say or do in this regard? Select a key passage from any TWO of the religious texts; one for Muslims and one for Christians or Jews. Why is this important? Your passages can come from the Quran, the Hadiths, the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible, used by both Jews and Christians), or the New Testament (Christian Gospels). Quote and cite the passage. Explain and relate to your discussion. You can cite the religious text simply, such as giving the sura name and/or number or the chapter and verse. However, you will still need three other sources.
2. Other than Peter Singer and Marc Bekoff, who are some of the important advocates for animal welfare and animal rights? What are some of the important organizations for advocates for animal welfare and animal rights? What did/do they do? Give an example of an effort or campaign by one of these and discuss in detail. What has been the outcome of this effort? Who has been affected and how? Why is this important?
3. What exactly is entailed in animal experimentation? What are some of the key practices? What are some of the animals used for experiments? What do the experiments seek to find out, or what is the purpose? Discuss one key example. Where do the scientists get the animals for their research – from who, what, or where? What happens to the animals during the experiment? Do the animals survive the experiment? What happens to the animals after the experiment? What is the opinion of animal rights advocates about this? Why is all of this important?
4. What are the key dangers to the preservation of wildlife? Is the biggest problem poaching (hunting), habitat destruction or encroachment, loss of food supply, or something else? Select ONE specie of wildlife as your example and discuss in detail. What is causing the problem? – be analytical and detailed. What are the proposed solutions? Why is this issue important – for the animal, for humans, for the planet, for the future?
