Elements of a life plan. By far, the most complex assignment that you have for the semester is creating a plan for the remaning years of your life. There are assumptions: in your plan, you must live a minimum of 87 years; it must be a plan with detailed research (e.g., a retirement plan with specifics as to type of plan and duration, dollar amounts should not be addressed in the plan), age at retirement, remaining years, funeral plans. Common mistakes: students often spend the first 7 or 8 pages planning the next 5 years and only have a few paptes to detail
The life plan covers your full life. I want you to be able to think in terms of objectives (what you wish to accomplish), stategy (your plan), and tactics (what levers can you pull to produce these results such as diet or exercise or advanced degrees and so forth)..
Life span, how long we live, health span (the years of living well) and disease span (morbidity, the time when we encounter disease and/or limited function. Three goals here related to life planning. First, there are ways to increase the liklihood of a longer life. Wellness usually peaks in the mid forties and for the next several years the rate of decrease is gradual almost not noticed. Then in the mid fifties, the rate of decline accelerates for most with the onset of chronic disease like hypertension, diabetes and so on. For too many people from the mid fifties, life becomes the management of disease and eventual death.
In your life plan, you should find ways to enhance the probability of longer life and slower deterioratiion in wellness (decreaed morbidity). Ideally you want to have an active, healthy life right up to the moment of dealth. Think about where you find meaning and purpose. A career that is based on purpose is difficult to think of as “work.”
