GEOG 351 CITIES SPACE POWER (Urban Geography) Term paper (40 points) Each student is required to write an 8-10 page term paper (double spaced with font size 12 points). The term paper will be a review piece on selected topic. You are expected to choose a topic on urban development that is related to your own interests by the end of third week (4 points). There is no constraints on the topics and examples could include economic development, housing, transportation, segregation, crime, poverty, homeless.., After deciding your topic, you need to find at least four research articles from refereed academic journals. Examples of such journals include Urban Studies, Urban Geography, and Professional Geographer. You are required to read each article carefully. To help you write the term paper, you will be asked to read an article and write two-page summary around every two weeks and each summary accounts for four points (16 points in total). In the end, you need to synthesize the all the four research articles based on your reading and understanding of the issues. The final paper should cover a few issues including the significance of the topic/issue, the major findings of the articles, any conclusions you can get from the articles, and the differences of their findings. In the end, you can offer your assessment what more research is needed in the future which help deepen our understandings of the issues. You can collect up to 20 points in total The final paper should be about 8-10 papers excluding title page and references and will account for 20 points. It will be graded upon a few items: the organization and structure of the paper, clarity of the writing, logic of the reasoning, references, among others.
