The objective of this assignment is to facilitate and evaluate students’ understanding of motor skill, language, and cognitive development during infancy and early childhood. Another aim is to broach the social dimensions of attachment, culture, socialization, and identity development for infants and young children.
Students will self-select into pairs. Each pair is to identify, examine and explain a toy currently on the market for an infant, a toddler, or a young child. They are to write an expository essay with the following in mind:
a. What does the toy/game purport to teach/stimulate in infants, toddlers, or young children?
b. How does it supposedly do that? OR How do you image it does that?
c. Are the claims congruent with what you have learned concerning motor skills and cognitive processes for this stage of life? Include relevant theory and ideas.
d. What multicultural considerations come to mind concerning this toy/game? (i.e. matters concerning race, sex, religion, etc.).
Use authority to make your argument. Discuss the specifications for the toy/game in your essay and attach an advertisement. The paper should be 8 to 10 pages, typed, double-spaced, and in 12-point Times New Roman font. The paper should have one-inch margins all-around, with the right-side margin not justified.
A cover page is necessary with the students’ names included. A minimum of five citations are required and should be used according to the American Psychological Association (APA) standards. Direct quotations are not allowed. Deviation from any of the above formatting requirements will result in the deduction of points.
