1. Now that youve chosen the state that you are going to focus on in this class, discuss how dependency theory, modernization theory, globalization theory and/or democratization apply to your state. How can one or more of these theories helps us understand how the development, or lack of development, of your state? Provide examples.
2. Four major international development organizations are: the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the UN Conference on Trade and Development and the UN Development Programme.
After visiting the websites of the four organizations listed above, explain the efforts of two of them in the state you chose to focus on in this class. Examine their impact critically and look for credible sources that critique these organizations. Include relevant reflections from the course reading.
3. Sustainable development is focused on three priorities: 1) maintaining the ecological system; 2) providing for the sustainable use of resources; and, 3) maintaining biodiversity (Griffiths, OCallaghan and Roach 2008).
Explain the environmental situation in the state you chose to focus on in this class; discuss the government’s policy toward sustainable development and provide a link to a newspaper or journal article.
4. Although women in many societies are responsible for gathering food and caring for the family, which are two tasks crucial to each family, they may have little, if any, access to education or medical care and may work long, unpaid hours. Be sure to complete the course reading and weave it into your discussion.
Analyze the societal views towards women and transgender people in the state you chose to focus on for this course. What is state policy toward gender equality? Please comment on policies (or lack thereof) affecting the LGBTQIA+ community.
