Find at least 6 artworks (to create 3 different comparisons) to compare and contrast to each other. They will be compared as using “art for communication” to its viewer.
You will discuss the ways that artists can use art to communicate a political or social message. Identify and support your argument with examples of at least 3 artists and at least 6 art works from at least two different countries or centuries that have used their art to comment on a social or political issue from reliable sources such as museum sites.
Once you have the artworks selected:
1) Identify each work: culture, location, date, medium, artist, location
2) In one or two sentences, explain why you selected each work. This is the beginning of a thesis for using “Art as Communication”. Not just your opinion, but moving towards what you want to prove to us about your selections for a final paper later on.
4) Introductory paragraph: Begin with a “hook,” then introduce your topic “Art as Communication” in 3-4 sentences, and include your thesis statement as the last sentence in the introduction. As a reminder, the thesis statement provides a strong central argument for the paper, not a statement of your papers topic. In creating the theme for your paper and your 3 comparisons, consider examining how artists and their art works, either contemporary or historical, have been shaped by unequal social and economic relationships among various peoples in Western cultures
5) Create a 300+ word outline of your paper. Be sure to include all 6 artworks and why selected (i.e. how each one supports your thesis and relates to the topic.) This should indicate how you will break down your topic and how you intend to support your thesis. The outline should be in outline format that clearly shows your papers organization and hierarchy of ideas. It should be specific researched detail for your paper, not an outline with placeholders for future information.
6) Include images of the artworks, with links and correctly cited and identified in a format to match the textbook captions. Be sure to include identification and cite your sources correctly in MLA format.
