Discussion group 12
On the following spreadsheet, you will find a series of communications in Spacetacean that have been intercepted.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Pg02QoC7hS_0UuZen7mU2xScmRmZzDuLE3T5Jtyy8JM/edit?usp=sharing (Links to an external site.)

There are 6 communications. Your job is to translate one of them into English. Each communication is 5 lines. Which 5 line communication you translate depends on your Discussiongroup, according to the chart in the document above. Look at Column B (“Translation Discussiongroups”). Find the section containing your group number and do those 5 lines.

For example, for lines 1 to 5, Column B says “1-8”. This means that anyone in Discussiongroup 1 to Discussiongroup 8 would translate ALL of those lines.

PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU SELECT THE CORRECT 5 LINES. WE WON’T GRADE YOUR ANSWER IF YOU CHOSE THE WRONG SET OF 5. EMAIL PRANAV IF YOU ARE CONFUSED.

Question 1:
Please translate your 5 sentences from Spacetacean into English. Please put each translation on its own line, and number them using the numbers in the story.

You don’t need to do 3-line (or 4-line) glosses. Just English is fine.

Below, I have provided an example of what we are looking for in orange text. Notice that I put the line numbers in parentheses, which will make it easy to extract. Also notice that if you want to put any notes about lines, please do so at the end, in a section called Notes (like I did). Please use the numbering system I provide — a number inside parentheses. And please put your notes AFTER your entire translation. I’m asking because I automatically extract your responses, and it’s easier if you are following my format.

(1) Once there was a sky made of cheese.

(2) The cheese said unto the cosmos, “I am a piece of cheese.”

(3) The cosmos said nothing.

(4) It just waved.

(5) That’s a terrible joke made much worse.

(6) Could you make it worse?

—–

Notes:

(1) I didn’t know we were talking about cheese!

(2) Maybe cosmos is actually “sky”?

Question 2:
In a short paragraph, please list who you collaborated with on this assignment, what work you were responsible for, and what work your collaborators did. You must complete this section to receive credit for your translation. It’s ok to work with others on this and to even arrive at the same exact wording. Just credit people for how they helped you.
