Tasks written research proposal or study
There was a research proposal presentation before the research proposal which I uploaded in the file section. Although you should keep the topic “code-switching”(The social functions of code-switching among multilinguals in the context of a Bangkok basketball court), you are free to change anything and research questions to come up with your own. So, the presentation slides are just for your reference(which was an assignment before that we have to do) and I also uploaded a file with professor’s comments on my presentation. Actually, you can change the topic a little bit like those similar to code-switching. And you can create a new scene or environment. You can do either a research proposal or a small-scale study as well. Since this is for a qualitative research method course for linguistics, so showing qualitative method knowledge in linguistics is important.
Task descriiption: Written proposal/study
Develop a research proposal or carry out a small-scale qualitative study on a topic of interest to you. For this task, you have three options, all of which have the same word limit:
1. A research proposal
2. A research proposal with pilot qualitative or mixed methods data analysis
3. A small-scale study including qualitative or mixed methods data analysis and findings
Choose the option which best suits your goals and stage of research. If you are preparing for a thesis in more than one course, you must ensure that the work you submit for this assessment is distinct in both content and wording from work you submit for any other course.
Proposal (Options 1 or 2)
The proposal should be feasible in terms of timeline (4-6 months), data collection (e.g. availability of participants, accessibility of research site) and analysis (e.g. researcher capacity and resources). The proposal should demonstrate a need for the research in relation to a thorough literature review. You can include pilot data analysis which demonstrates the feasibility of the study/method and from which you may be able to project preliminary findings which justify your research aim.
Small-scale study (Option 3)
A small-scale study would include all the elements of a proposal, but with the addition of data analysis, findings and conclusions. If you choose this option, your method must be qualitative or mixed methods with a strong qualitative component. For this option, your literature review will be shorter than if you choose to write a proposal only.
