Reading
Freire, Paulo; “The Banking Concept of Education” pp. 25-38 (RCE)
Plato; “The Allegory of the Cave” pp. 48-56 (RCE)
Plato; “The Apology” pp.57-82 (RCE)
Discussion Questions:
1) Why does the “banking-style” approach education by shaping the student’s reality (Freire 27)? Why might this be harmful to students and/or the societies in which they live?
2) Last week, we read that being liberally educated means developing the capacity to be “self-aware, self-governing, and capable of respecting the humanity of all our fellow human beings” (Nussbaum 42). How is this idea manifest in Freire’s proposal of the “problem-posing” educational method?
3) Both Freire and Plato (in “The Allegory”) describe the ways in which we (often unconsciously, sometimes happily) submit to our own intellectual imprisonment. Why do you think this is so? Can you cite an example of this in your own life, in education, or in society? How does this relate to David Foster Wallace’s theory of “unconsciousness”?
4) Taken from Plato’s book The Republic, both readings address the attributes of a healthy society. What are those attributes and how are they represented in the story of the cave and in Socrates’ trial? What obligation does the individual have to their society, according to Plato and Socrates?
5) What is the difference in the motivations of Socrates and his accusers? Why is it important we recognize this distinction?
