Write a 3 page paper in standard MLA format. Points will be deducted for short papers so make sure they are a full 3 pages!
Your assignment is to view a live performance online and write a paper about the performance. You can watch a classical, jazz, rock, pop, R&B, or even a musical theater performance. Make sure the performance features American music, and any musical genre is fine as long as it is a legitimate concert. A live performance of people playing instruments and/or singing. Tell me about the concert:
The name of the concert, the instruments used, the setting, the style of music performed and where it took place.
Using your knowledge of the history and roots of American music, discuss how the music featured in the concert you attended evolved into what you heard in the concert.
Drawing from the text and the lectures, be as specific as you can by connecting relevant historical American works and artists to the concert you saw. Where do you hear these influences and evolutions in your concert?
Choose two individual songs or compositions from your concert and connect those works to American musical history.
How do each of these works relate to the American music that came before it? Make sure to be specific in your comparison of these individual works to other musical movements and works in American musical history.
How do you hear Freedom of Expression and Musical Diversity being practiced in these works?
Conclude with your final thoughts about the concert. Did you enjoy it? Why or why not?
Performances you’ve seen in the past are NOT acceptable. It must be a performance you watch during the course of this class. Any outside information gathered for the purposes of the paper must be cited, but the majority of your paper will be based upon your own ear, as well as our textbook and lectures. Of course you can add anything else that is relevant to the topic in your paper, just make sure to include everything above.
If you watch the performance on TV, you must include the date and time watched and the channel.
If you stream the concert online, you must give the date and time each was watched.
If you watch a video on YouTube or other website, you must give the date and time each video was watched, and the URL.
